umThombe Kei River Lodge
Self Catering accommodation, Restaurant available
Kei Mouth, Eastern Cape, South Africa |
|
Hidden away on the banks of the Great Kei River lies a small valley surrounded by cycad-strewn cliffs, eagle-view koppies and fig-cradled forests. The local Xhosa tribes describe this place as 'kwanto zonke' - 'here is everything'. Nestled in this secluded nature reserve you will find a rustic lodge, where harmony and tranquility resonate with the ebb and flow of the tide.
The pulse of the River is felt in everything here: whether you are gliding along in our kayaks, hiking to hidden pools, fishing for the legendary cob, or simply watching sunset turn the cliffs to gold as the crowned cranes fly home to roost.
Accommodation & Facilities
Accommodation is offered in three thatched chalets, each with two double rooms (with en-suite bathrooms) connected by a semi-open braai/dining area and a fully equipped kitchen. The rooms are self-contained and can be booked separately out of season. The chalets overlook the Great Kei River, with magnificent views of cycads and fish eagles on the cliffs opposite. Camping is provided in grassed sites on the river bank.
The lodge has a restaurant and bar, as well as a central braai area for larger gatherings.
River Cruises - join us for a sunset cruise, or take a trip all the way up to Horse-shoe bend, where the beauty of the Kei reaches her climax. Even if you aren't staying at the lodge, book the ferry for a day-trip from Kei Mouth.
Day trips to the Wild Coast - experience the unspoilt grandeur and ruggedness of SA's most beautiful coast. The car ferry at Kei Mouth runs from sunrise to sunset, giving you the whole day to explore. We can advise you on 4x4 routes, fishing spots, beaches and cultural highlights.
Outdoor Facilities
Fishing - the lodge is situated just opposite the famous "Cob Hole", a 40ft deep fisherman's dream.
Bird-watching - with habitat varying from dense riverine forest to coastal scrub, valley bushveld, open woodland and, of course, the river itself, this is a birder's paradise.
Kayaking - we have two double sit-on-top kayaks and several canoes for our guests' use (free of charge). Enjoy the river at the water-line and experience bird-watching at its best.
Hiking - there are several trails on the nature reserve, ranging from relaxed strolls through riverine forest to more serious hill-climbs, with rewarding views of the sea and Kei Mouth. Or be adventurous and explore the magnificent forests on the other side of the Kei River. We can provide maps and direct you to the best natural features, including Picnic Pool, Gxara Falls, the wreck of the Jacaranda and The Gates.
The Beach - the lodge is 5km away from the sea up the Kei River, 10 minutes by ferry.
