The Artist's Cottage
Self Catering
Prince Albert , Western Cape, South Africa |

|
The Artist's Cottage was built ca.100 years ago (front section). The original entrance façade has mouldings around the door and windows. Extended to include a new bedroom, ensuite bathroom and two outdoor seating areas, the cottage (65 m²) now offers a delightful and cosy self-catering accommodation for two and is a perfect base for exploring the region. The interior has been vibrantly styled with a mix of some of the best contemporary South African craft and design, carefully restored vintage furniture and the artist’s paintings.
Together with the owner's main house, the property has been featured in several publications: House & Leisure (Dec 2001), SA Architectural Digest (2004), 10 Architects, 100 Houses (2008), House & Leisure (May 2009), Sarie Woon (Nov 2010).

Prince Albert nestles at the foot of the majestic Swartberg Mountains, the 2nd highest range in South Africa, on the edge of the Great Karoo - a seemingly barren plain of vast proportions. This semi-arid area boasts stupendous scenery in the form of endless vistas bordered by the Cape Fold Mountains, flat-topped mesas and other interesting geologic formations. Prince Albert is a green oasis with furrow-led water running off the mountains and is situated just 2 hours, via the spectacular river gorge Meiringspoort and Oudtshoorn, from a major airport with regular domestic connections: George. Cape Town is 4-5 hours distant via the accessible, well-constructed N1. Route 62, a favourite drive through charming historical towns, winelands and beautiful scenery, is within close reach via the imposing Swartberg Pass. The Karoo National Park near Beaufort West offers an interesting day trip excursion.
Cultural & Historical interest
Prince Albert, named after Queen Victoria's consort, is famous for its well-preserved historical buildings, mostly dating from the 19th century. The "Holbol" gable, typical of the town's Cape Dutch architecture, distinguishes several fine buildings. Also present is the typical Karoo flat-roofed, more minimalist style, distilled from the original labourers' cottages. The area around Prince Albert bears many traces of earlier civilizations as well as of pre-human life. Fossils and artefacts abound. Flora and fauna vary from the semi-arid Great Karoo plain coastwards through the impressive Swartberg and Outeniqua mountains. Vast spaces, pure fresh air and year round sunshine: extraordinary!
