Accommodation in Southbroom - Ocean View Chalet, Southbroom, KwaZulu-Natal

Ocean View Chalet is one of several privately owned holiday homes situated on a hillside overlooking the Umkobi Lagoon and the sea, on the south coast of KwaZulu-Natal. Together these chalets comprise a secure access-controlled complex called Umkobi Lodge in the village of Southbroom, about 150 Kms south of Durban on the R61 - the extension of the N2 highway from Durban. The chalets are wooden structures built on stilts and lost from each other's view amongst the wild banana trees and other subtropical vegetation of KwaZulu-Natal. They are all privately owned units, most of which are used exclusively by their owners as weekend and holiday retreats.

Ocean View is a three bedroom chalet overlooking the lagoon and the warm Indian Ocean. (The main picture is the actual view from the deck of the chalet across the lagoon to the beach and the sea). Full length sliding class doors open from the open-plan living area and two of the three bedrooms, onto the spacious wooden deck. The deck extends along the front of the house, and the side adjoining the living area.

Accommodation & Facilities
The chalet has three bedrooms and two bathrooms of which one is en-suite. Two of the bedrooms have double beds and the third has two single beds. Bedding and towels are provided.

The three bedrooms and the living area have adjustable-speed ceiling fans. The open plan kitchen is fully equipped with microwave oven, stove/oven, toaster, kettle, fridge, fully automatic washing machine and tumble dryer. Adequate utensils (cooking, cutlery, glasses, cups, mugs, plates etc.) are provided for six people. A small sound system (radio, CD/casette tape player) is available for the use of guests. A fully enclosed garage is situated below the house.

Digital satellite television offers over 50 South African and international television channels including BBC World, CNN, The History Channel and Discovery etc.

All three South African cell/mobile phone services are accessible.

Outdoor Facilities
A "Blue Flag" beach of international standard is within a five-minute drive or easy walking distance along the beach. Guests are welcome to use a small paddle boat to observe the rich bird life in the reeds and trees around the edge of the lagoon, or paddle about 400 metres across the lagoon to the sandy beach. The boat and its paddles is kept in the garage under the house. The lagoon is ideal for sail boarding.

The Impenjati Nature and Marine Reserve is situated a few kilometres to the south at the mouth of the Impenjati River and offers joggers or casual strollers many kilometres of unspoilt pristine beach. For the less energetic, a well maintained pool and communal entertainment area is about 80 metres from the house at the end of a winding path through the banana trees. For the golf enthusiast, the Southbroom Golf Course is no more than a 5-minute drive away.

The popular holiday resorts of Ramsgate and Margate are about a 10-minute drive to the north of the chalet.
