About Parys and the Vredefort Dome
Parys is a small and vibrant town in South Africa. It lies on the banks of the Vaal River 120 km south of Johannesburg. Parys offers visitors a variety of attractions, ranging from browsing wonderful antique shops and art galleries to adventure sporting.
Parys itself is situated inside the Vredefort Dome, which is the remains of an ancient crater. The crater was formed 2000 million years ago when a meteorite as big as Table Mountain struck the earth. The crater was about 90 km in diameter with the center of impact near Vredefort. The Vredefort Dome area received World Heritage Site status in August 2005...
