Welcome to Blackwaters River Lodge – your own sheltered private hide away, surrounded by indigenous forests on the banks of the Goukamma River whose mysterious black waters meander along the edge of the estate., located in the fertile Goukamma Valley only 10 minutes outside of Knysna and 5 minutes from one of the Cape coasts best bathing areas and a surfers paradise, Buffalo Bay beach. This is the ideal base from which to explore the Garden Route
Blackwaters River Lodge is perfect for those who seek the peace and quite of the country and yet are only minutes away from Knysna . The three hectare estate with its lush gardens and its wealth of indigenous trees, including several different species of yellow woods, provides food for the soul and the atmosphere in which to revitalize the spirit. And on those sunny summer days when you have had enough of the beach or the Capes famous “Doctor” the South Easter blows and turns the beach into a sand pit, retire to our sheltered valley and relax at the swimming pool over looking the River sipping a cocktail from the private residents bar or try your hand at a game of Golf on our 9 hole Mashie short course
The Main house and recreational area have a feel of Africa in both design and décor with high timber ceilings and beams, klinker brick walls, numerous log fire places and rooms scattered with artefacts collected over the years from all over Southern Africa. The sunny Breakfast room is tastefully decorated with a selection of African weave baskets and the Braai deck with its towering “Giant Stralitzias” and railway sleeper table and benches both over look the swimming pool and river valley.
Accommodation & Facilities
We offer bed and a full breakfast as well as self-catering accommodation.. The Accommodation consists of:-
2 Deluxe suites upstairs in the main house both with full bathrooms en-suite, fireplaces and balcony’s, overlooking the River and surrounding forests. (The Executive/Honeymoon suite is air-conditioned)
4 Spacious standard rooms in the garden complex with full bathrooms en-suite and verandas onto the gardens (two have light self-catering facilities.)
2 Family suites in the garden complex, with full bathrooms en-suite and verandas onto the gardens (one has light self-catering facilities).
2 Small but cosy twin bedded rooms one in the garden and one upstairs in the main house, with shower en-suite
All our rooms have ceiling fans, TV, coffee and tea making facilities.
Outdoor Facilities

Bird watching:- Bird life is prolific, with trees having been planted especially to attract them to our gardens. 30% (100+ species) of Garden Route birds can be seen or heard throughout the year right here at Blackwaters River Lodge.
Canoeing:- Canoe down the gently flowing river, all the way to the beach (+/-2.5hours) if you have the time, Return transport can be arranged.
Dinners/ Barbeques:- For dinner our guests can join us for our home cooked “meal of the day”or a sumptuous fish braai, or marinated Ostrich fillets on the grill (Booking essential min 4 people). Alternatively visit the restaurants in Knysna or Sedgefield.
Golf, 9 hole Mashie:- Should you wish to improve your short game or just have some family fun, we have our own very challenging 9-hole Mashie (pitch & putt) golf course on the estate with stunning scenery. Longest hole 140 meters, shortest 52 meters. Clubs can be hired from the Rustic Golf Bar.
Natural History Library:- We have a extensive selection of books on the Natural History and Travel in Southern Africa. A selection of magazines, novels and short stories is also available.
Pool Table:- In the residents lounge
Picnics on the river banks:- Our guests can have tables down by the rivers edge, with braai facilities. Braai baskets are available on request for those guests who would like to braai close to their rooms.
Star Gazing:-The setting is unique, on clear evenings the night skies of the Southern Hemisphere are spectacular as the reflection of the lights of Knysna do not affect us. Pick out the numerous constellations from the Milky Way, the Centaur, the Southern Cross, and Orion to name a few.

The proprietors:- Live on the property and are, therefore, on hand day and night to ensure that the guests are well cared for.
