Over 200 buildings built between 1860 and 1910 from beautiful local sandstone by Cornish stonemasons still in good preservation. When diamonds discovered in Hopetown (later Kimberley also) the most accesible harbour. Most convenient harbour for wool from Little Karoo and later for the "Ostrich feather boom". During Anglo-Boer War, all the British horses (150'000) from Australia, New Zealand and the Indies imported through Mossel Bay as well as the fodder.
